BERC will utilize the research strengths of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in energy efficient technologies and building environmental research to further develop state-of-the-art technology and products for commercial applications. Our research focuses on building related energy efficient technologies (including ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, etc.), effective usage of energy (energy saving, solar energy, waste heat), and indoor air quality (health and comfort). We aim to create a healthy, comfortable and sustainable living environment. BERC will also collaborate with Mainland institutions and industry, as well as for education and training.

Research Focus
  • Low-energy solar thermal HVAC systems using advanced synthetic materials
  • - New adsorbents and its adsorption properties
    - Develop energy-saving solar adsorption cooling system to replace traditional vapor compression HVAC systems
Solar Integrated Adsorption Thermal System
  • Advanced air purification system
  • - Utilize micro/meso porous materials to develop new catalytic oxidation air purification technologies
    - Develop advanced filtration system with porous polymeric membranes
Bruker Tensor 27 FT-IR spectrometers with
short path length gas cell (10cm)
  • Solid state lighting

  • Solid state lighting will become the next generation lighting technology. BERC will focus on research of LED application, including residential lighting, spot lights, screen displays, etc.
  • Advanced ventilation system
  • Develop ventilation system that is effective, energy-saving and available for production. Devices used for the ventilation system will also be addressed. Computational simulation will be used to assist our research and design
