| Earlier before the set-up of the Research Institute, the HKUST has set foot in Nansha for more than 4 years, since its collaboration with Guangzhou Government and Fok Ying Tung Foundation for the establishment of Nansha IT Park in 2002.
HKUST keeps on working closely with the other two parties, and putting on its effort to be responsible for the planning, promotion and execution of the NITP, with the input of expertise, in order to nurture high technology start-ups, expand opportunities for Hong Kong companies, and enhance the competitiveness of industries in the Pearl River Delta region.
Witnessing the rapid development of Nansha, HKUST brewed a new thought ¨C to set up a Research Institute right here at Nansha, to expand HKUST's academic and research influence in South China, and even stretching to the whole nation.
This idea is coming true step by step by multiple supports. Since the foundation on 25 Jan 2007, the School has established 10 research centers/project and 2 joint labs by now. Meanwhile, the School has registered to be a principal investigator institution with the 863 National Research Scheme, and the National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), awarded an International Science & Technology Cooperation Base by the Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST) and established a post-doctoral work station, a prestigious status promoted by the Central Government in collaboration with the Nansha IT Park. All these efforts will lay the foundation for the long-term development of the Graduate School in future. |
